Tips to help you save gas

Due to the constant rise in oil prices, car owners are more concerned about how they can save gas and money while driving. This article gives you tips on how to reduce your gas consumption and save money.

Always have your car adjusted regularly. If your car's engine is in bad shape, it will consume more gasoline. Maintaining your car's engine will help it run efficiently and thus improve your spending.  Clean or replace clogged air filters to increase your fuel consumption by as much as 10%.

Maintain a stable rate when driving your car. Frequent stops while driving add up to 30% to your gasoline spending. Imagine spending $3.00 per gallon, then you lose $9.00 for every 10 gallons of gasoline you consume. Avoid sudden stops and abrupt speed increases. Use cruise control when driving on the highway. This allows you to maintain a constant speed and avoid extra gas consumption.

  • Another way to keep the speed stable is by avoiding heavy traffic. Also avoid unnecessary use of the clutch.
  • Plan your gas purchase during the cool hours.  It is ideal to refuel early in the morning or in the evening. During these cooler hours you buy extra for your money.
  • Close your car windows when driving on the highway. When your windows are closed, the aerodynamics are better and the vehicle's drag is reduced. Opening the windows causes extra friction and reduces the mileage of your cars.
  •  Minimize the use of air conditioners when not needed. Use vents in your cars if possible. If you really need to use your air conditioner, try to set it as low as possible. Do not operate your air conditioner with your car windows open - it uses more gas this way.
  • Do not let your engine idle when you are not driving. Turn off your car's engine if you have to wait longer than a minute. If your car idles for more than a minute, it will use the same amount of gas that you would use when you restart the engine.

Load your car. The heavier the car, the more gas it consumes.

Make sure the tires are inflated accordingly. Tires with the right pressure save better fuel than when they contain too little or too much air.
